Us ladies have many things in common, including, at times, insecurities. Many of us have parts of our body that we dislike or often try to hide with our clothing choices. Although, in all truthfulness, how you look at any stage is probably amazing as hell, I also understand that sometimes you may feel more comfortable when accentuating certain features over the others. We all feel this way from time to time. Unfortunately, clothing isn’t designed to help us out with this stuff too often, and we have to rely on our own tricks to make the most of what we can buy. This is especially true when it comes to dresses.
Finding the perfect dress is a task which most women would agree can be difficult most of the time. Most of us only have one or likely no “perfect” dress we can rely on for the special occasions which call upon us to look our best, because it’s rare to find something that fits you like a glove as they say. Yet there’s nothing quite like that extra kick in our step when we’re wearing something that we feel really good in, is there? So how do we find that dress that makes us go from timid average human in the back of the room to strutting down that invisible fashion runway in any room we walk into? It’s simple, find the fit that works for YOUR features.
The market is yet to reach the advanced stage where each dress price tag comes with a descriptor on the body type the dress would fit best (yes I am patenting this, so don’t even think about it), so we’re really only guessing when we get dressed. Except when you’ve got an expert opinion such as your girl right here guiding you through your shopping experience. For your convenience, I’m going to run you through a few of my personal picks of dresses I think will suit specific body types best if you’re seeking to hide specific parts and accentuate the others, and from there you can make your picks on which dress you find most appealing for you!
If you’ve got…
Thick Thighs or Wide Hips
If your gorgeous thighs or hips are an insecurity and you’d rather cover them up for an event or night out, then the type of dress you’re looking for is one which flares out from the waist to about your calves. A gorgeous A-line Sweetheart Tea- Length dress does a fantastic job of accentuating the smallest part of your leg which is the part below your knees, thus minimizing your hip and thigh appearance significantly. The dress also perfectly focuses on the top part of your body, accentuating your beautiful curves. If your dress flares out only to the knees, often it tends to make the bum and hip section look bigger rather than smaller, thus sticking to a mid calf length is a good tip if you choose dresses of this type.
If your arms are insecurity, you probably avoid sleeveless and strapless dresses like the plague, which is understandable. However, rather than always opting for a long sleeve or wearing a bolero or cardigan over your dresses, you should consider investing in a nice off the shoulder dress. A dress which begins right at your collarbone is open enough to where you are still elegant and beautiful, but you do not necessarily look like a nun covered head to toe. This absolutely stunning off the shoulder A-line dress is a gorgeous way to disguise your insecurities but still look fashionable and modern with all the beautiful detailing on the dress. The off the shoulder bit covers the thicker part of your arm, making it a flattering look on most!
A common mistake many women make with dresses is buying ones which accentuate the worst parts of their tummy. Dresses which are baby-doll style tend to be tight around the rib cage, which is wider naturally, and then flare out, and instead of masking your tummy, the awkward flare out is usually giving your side profile a ‘I’m pregnant’ look. Also, unless you have great abs or really great spanx, a skin tight dress likely won’t make you look any bit smaller than you are, in fact quite the opposite. The trick to hiding a tummy is to draw attention away from it subtly.
What you want to go for is dresses which have some shaping or tightness in the upper mid part of your stomach and then flare out gently. Try a dress which has the waist accentuation slightly around or above your belly button, but not too much, to give your silhouette a slimmer look. Dresses such as this beyond stunning floor length gown, which is perfect for hiding that little tummy. If you notice, the mid section stomach part of this dress is on the lower end, thus cinching in your waist slightly, and then the dress falls beautifully over the remainder of your body, hiding any issues such as your tummy pooch.
If for whatever reason you don’t like your beautiful legs, then you’ll be relieved to find that dressing for them doesn’t always have to mean floor length ball gown. Opting for a slight slit in your dress is a great way to hide your legs but also show off that you actually have them. This sexy yet elegant floor length dress does a fantastic job at showing just the right amount of leg while accentuating all your best features. The slit is at a perfect thigh length showing only the slimmest part of ones leg, thus is extremely flattering for most women!
Now that you’ve got a few ideas, it’s time to go out and shop! Remember, the number one thing to note is how you feel in a dress because ultimately, if you wear it well you can wear anything. Disregard body type rules and simply wear what you feel best in, and you’ll likely rock it regardless. They key is confidence and a nice smile, so strut your hot stuff!
