Ah, the New Year has begun! Happy New Year my beautiful readers! After what seemed like a wild and rather quick 2017, we are already in 2018 and the holidays are already over, just like that! For many of us, we are slowly easing back into work, school and other life obligations. But we can’t forget the infamous resolutions and goals we are all expected to set for ourselves. After all, we do want to have a good time and be able to reflect in 360-ish days about all that we’ve accomplished.
Whether you are a resolutions type of person or not, chances are you do have a few things you want to improve on or accomplish in the next year regardless. After all, we’re all human and that’s kinda what we are supposed to be doing year to year. Even if you don’t necessarily believe in the setting a New Year’s resolution hype, you deep down do want to be living well and accomplishing some specific things in the new year, don’t you?
So to start this year off with a bang, it seems only suitable that we’ll begin by talking about how to live your best life this year in 2018 and onward. Living your best life doesn’t mean extravagance and lavishness necessarily, it simply means you are happy, healthy and fulfilled in all areas of your life to the best of your current ability. So if you’re trying to figure out how to improve your life, how to stick to your New Year’s resolutions, or simply how to live well, then you’ve come to the right place! Here are only a few ways we can begin to live our “best life” right now!
A key part to any success in your life will be your health, mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. Now, don’t worry, I’m not saying you have to go on a fitness kick and eat only broccoli in order to live your best life. That’s ridiculous! You can eat what you want, so long as you balance it with what you need. Your body needs the proper vitamins and nutrients in order to provide you with energy, endurance and clarity to focus on other tasks and goals at hand. Eating well some of the time, and working out are only going to help you become more productive, confident and energized, leaving room for many other fun things!
Nourishment isn’t only limited to the physical. It is just as important to nourish your mind and your feelings. Reading some interesting or helpful literature will do wonders in feeding your mind and spirit. Even if you don’t consider yourself much of a reader, picking up an occasional self help book or some good fiction will do wonders for developing and keeping your mind sharp and alert. Music also soothes the mind and soul, find some good ones and listen when you are getting ready, before bed and mid-day.
It’s important to keep in mind that our soul needs care as much as our stomach does. Meditation, self reflection and thought will nourish your spirit and feelings, allowing you to become calmer, more comfortable with who you are and more clear in what you want and how you can best achieve it. Journaling is one way to organize your thoughts and make sense of them, and can become a key part to your self reflection. When you know yourself well, and treat yourself well, there is no issue you cannot tackle. A massive key to ones success is being able to balance everything within, in order to produce on the outside, so beginning with nourishment of our minds, soul and body is one of these key factors!
Clean the Mess
Cleaning your home or living area physically is a great way to help de-clutter a part of your life, but the kind of cleaning that will bring you better results in the new year is a de-cluttering of your mind and your daily life.
It is time to let go of certain people or situations which may be causing you stress, anxiety and overall confusion. You cannot prosper if you aren’t able to let go of the things and people which weigh on you, because no matter how many steps you take upwards in your life, something will always weigh you down. As hard as it may be, making peace with the fact that some people are only meant to be in your life for a season will allow you to live your best life. You don’t have to let go of people on bad terms, but you do have to put yourself first from now on. Know that if somebody isn’t making you happy, or isn’t adding positivity into your life, it may be time to wish them well, and go about your separate journeys. In the end this will benefit the both of you.
Situations which you may be caught up in that are not bringing you success, or helping you move forward need to also be left in 2017. You don’t have the time or energy to be putting into situations and places where you won’t be able to grow or move forward, you are simply stagnant and going to remain as such until you learn to cut ties. A new job, new living situation or new relationship are all things to consider when looking at the areas in your life which bring you more harm than good. Now is the time to do it, this is your sign that you’ve been needing. Begin de-cluttering your life and clear your path to prosperity and happiness!
And lastly, you didn’t think I’d leave out social media, did you? I know, I know it’s addictive and fun to be scrolling on your timelines on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and whatnot. We all love it. But how much benefit is this bringing you? Is it paying your bills? If it is then you do you boo boo, but more often it probably isn’t and you probably need to make changes. Do you find yourself comparing your life to other people’s perfectly staged highlights and feeling somehow less accomplished as a result? Do you stalk specific people’s pages for what they’re doing instead of doing something for yourself? Now may be the time to de-clutter and take a social media break. You don’t have to leave your social media pages, but take a new approach in how you use it. A good rule of thumb is that if it’s not bringing you any good personally, then it’s not worth too much of your time. You don’t have to hit block, but do treat your time and attention as the high value gift that it is, and only dedicate it to situations and people which deserve it!
Have a Plan
Ever tried hiking in the woods? Ever been to a large forest? How does it make you feel when you see no marked paths or signs in these forests? You probably are confused, worried and likely to be cautious in deciding to enter, right? Well, your goals and plans are almost exactly like the forest. Stay with me here, okay. If you don’t have a plan laid out as to how you will meet your goals or accomplish something, you are bound to take a heck of a long time navigating your way through, you’ll be confused, scared, and likely stressed out. If you don’t know how to get through the forest, you will not be able to walk all the way through very easily, you’ll stumble and run into some odd and scary situations or creatures. In terms of your goals, you can spend ages wandering around like a headless chicken, and remain confused and nowhere near your finish line, if you don’t have a set plan for how you will begin to tackle your goal.
It is important to have a clear plan for anything you wish to do. It doesn’t have to be the most precise plan, you are allowed to make room for mistakes and setbacks, but you need a plan of action. If you want a new job, outline how you’ll make your way there. Do you need to build your resume? Maybe you need to contact so and so who knows so and so. Whatever your goal is, a clear plan, written down, is going to increase your chances of success. It can even be as simple as writing out your goals and a general outline of how you will go about achieving them. Ultimately, if you want to live your best life, you gotta plan for it and then execute like a champ.
Make Yourself Judge and Jury
In order for you to succeed, you are going to have to tune out outside noise. As lovely as your friends, coworkers or family may be, only you are the one taking each step in your own two shoes. If you want to live your best life, you have got to put more value in your own mind and thoughts and less in other people’s opinions and feelings. Your mind is your world. If your mind is not right, then your world will always be off balance, no matter how many friends or conquests you have.
If you put too much value in other people’s thoughts, you risk losing yourself in their validation or criticism. Everything you do cannot become to spite or impress someone else, because that’s a battle you never win. There’s always going to be someone who’s not totally impressed or someone who doesn’t quite “get it”. And this doesn’t matter because only YOU have to get it. Only YOU are the one who needs to make sense of your goals and ideas as you move forth.
Make room for love and caring for others, but keep in mind that in order to give your best to others, you have to be at your best. In living your best life, you have to build a world for yourself where you are happy and content. If you constantly seek validation from others or depend on their comments, you are going to be fighting to satisfy them, and in turn, make yourself miserable because your emotions will be controlled by other people. Remember, you are placing your happiness in the hands of someone else when you allow their opinion of you to be more important than your own opinion of you. Your happiness belongs to you and you only.
Be Content With Your Current Destination
We’re leading into the last and most important point in living your best life, and that is to be here and be good, right now. You don’t have to be in the same stage or spot as your peers. You don’t have to have the same path to success as everyone else in your field. Maybe it’ll take you a few more years or a few stumbles to get to where you’re going, and you have got to be alright with that, because that’s YOUR story. The phase or spot you’re in currently is the place you’re supposed to be in. There are lessons and growth to be had here, and you should keep that in mind when you feel the need to compare to others or criticize yourself for not being further along already. Your time will come.
In order to live the best life you can, you have got to get your mind right. If you’re living in the past, you’re literally wasting the present day and your own future. The past can’t be changed, it can only be a lesson. If you’re still stuck in the past, there is a lesson you’re missing and have to learn. Think about what that is and then use that lesson to move forward smarter and more confident.
The most important way to live your best life is to become aware that you already are living it. No one goes from the start to the finish line in 2 seconds without actually running the race. Be realistic with yourself. Having goals is fantastic and important in growing and succeeding, but you cannot live so far in the future that you’re wasting the present moment. Make note of where you are and the great direction you are going to be heading in, in the future. Write them down if you need to. Find things to be impressed by. You’re already more privileged than most. You are more capable than most. Your best life is simply a shift in your thinking and in exhibiting a little more care to yourself, you earned it!
