Cold weather can be exciting for some people for two reasons: 1. You get to wear sweats and baggy clothing, and get away with it since it’s cold and everyone’s bundled up thus likely not too concerned with fashion, or 2. You get to layer up and put together amazing Winter wear that is cozy and comfortable, without needing to be in tip top shape.
The beauty of Winter fashion is that the clothing options are quite open. Unlike Summer where you often get too hot and have to wear the least, in Winter you can get away with wearing both lighter outfits under a big coat or several heavier layers, depending on how you feel. If you want to both feel and look good in the Winter months, then there are several key pieces you can own and alternate between outfits to make your look appear put together, yet still feel comfortable and cozy for you. The following 6 personal favorites are picked out with comfort in mind, as certain Winter outfits can be quite constrictive and heavy, and that should be avoided!
Some people don’t enjoy turtlenecks because they can get itchy or constrictive around the neck area. However, if you invest in a soft, quality turtleneck, it can be a quality piece for the cold months! Not only do they keep you warm, but a turtleneck makes you appear slimmer as it hides any fat you may have in your chin area, and shapes your neck up nicely, holding everything in place. You also tend to look quite sophisticated wearing one.
If you don’t want to pay a lot of money for thick, quality sweater turtlenecks, you can buy a lighter version that isn’t too thick yet is very soft, and will nonetheless look amazing when layered. Better yet, look in the Men’s sections of stores…you’ll be surprised what great turtleneck sweaters you can get that are both gender neutral and soft!
I am also a believer in using turtlenecks to replace scarves, as scarves can get itchy and also hinder your movement when you’re zipped up in your full jacket and gear. A turtleneck allows you to breathe and move your head around, without worrying about anything falling out of place.
If there is one accessory I stand behind, it is hats of any sort. There truly is a hat out there for every head shape that will make you look amazing, I guarantee it. A beanie is a key piece for Winter, not only in keeping you warm, but also saving you time. A nice beanie not only complements an outfit, but, depending on where you’re going, you may not even need to spend extra time on your hair. Simply put one on and go! Slouchie beanies are more comfortable since they’re not as tight on your head, whereas if you’re moving around a lot then a good old fashioned pom beanie may do the trick.
Plain V or Crew Neck Shirts
There is nothing I hate more in Winter than having to layer one hood from my top over the hood of my jacket. It gets to be too much around my shoulder area and I don’t feel it is too comfortable. If you want to achieve maximum comfort, try and opt for shirts and tops that don’t have a hood during the colder months, as often jackets will have a hood themselves and it’ll get constrictive. Moreover, plain V or Crew Neck shirts are great for layering, with a sweater over it or a blazer of some sort, keeping you both warm and stylish.
Thigh High Boots
These things are not just for strippers you know. Most people assume that thigh high boots are for the “Pretty Woman” look, and they tend to avoid it. Not only is this not the case, but recently the boots came back in style big time, and for a good reason… With variety to choose from, they’re perfect for wearing skirts, jeans or even yoga pants during the cold months, keeping your legs covered and warm, while looking put together. Knee length boots are great, but they don’t really allow you many options when it’s cold outside. Moreover, knee length Winter boots with a dress or skirt just doesn’t look too good, if we’re being honest. Thigh highs without a heel tend to look very cute and fashionable, without making you look cheap.
If you have thicker thighs, you can always check out Torrid or Fashion To Figure, as they make them wider and comfortable for all types of legs!
Knee Length Wool Coat
If thigh high boots aren’t your style, you should invest in a nice, long wool coat. It will keep your legs covered when wearing a skirt or dress, and it’ll keep you classy looking when wearing trousers. For the more sophisticated and mature look, long coats are the perfect choice.
While you may not think a puffer coat is a look for you…you may want to consider it anyway. The thing about puffer coats is that they’re VERY warm. The material is incredibly supportive for colder climates, so you will likely have little issues when going outside. You don’t have to go for the light colors if you don’t want to look like a marshmallow, feel free to choose a darker tone. However, with casual outfits, a puffer coat is perfect insulation and doesn’t require 15 layers of clothing underneath!
